The Wolf and the Seven Kids

Genrikh Ignatov, Elena Gutkina
Russia, 2017
Production : École du nouveau cinéma de Moscou

French, English

A father and his adult son live alone in a house near the forest. They spend most of their time at home. Each day resembles the previous one, driven by the precise rites of the son, that his father tries to follow and sometimes to interrupt.

Tënk's film review

From the bed to the dining table there seems to be only one step, and between father and son there seems to be so little space to share to live, at the edge of patience. Gutkina and Ignatov placed the camera, motionless, in this closed-door room at the end of the woods. We watch as if through a trapdoor the ballet of this cohabitation made of daily rituals, attentions, nervousness, contained violence. The young man - the child, the idiot, the madman, the burden - escapes us. Repetitive and obsessive: he goes out, comes in, says and repeats. Is the protective and authoritarian father, whether as a starter or off-screen, the mother of the tale who must protect her kids from the wolf's visit?
The film opens, the camera gives us wider shots, then Valya's face finally presents itself without evading. Beautiful face, pensive, sibylline.
