The astounding images dug up by Andrei Ujica of Nicolae Ceaușescu are dubbed “autobiographical” since it was the Romanian ‘Conducător’ himself who asked to be followed around by a camera whilst communist leader. Yet the overweening vanity of his propaganda rudely backfires. As we see him ridiculed in a volleyball match or glancing worriedly at Gorbachev, farce descends into tragedy, only deepened by the ambient sounds and obscure technical noises that Ujica uses to drown out the pomp of speeches and music. Totalitarian terror is made deafening.
