Alessandra Celesia sketches an original set of portraits here, carefully selecting her subjects before getting deep under their skin. The close intimacy she builds and her way of framing (lying halfway between theatre and cinema), lend a fictional edge to her work akin to the documentary side of Ken Loach, yet with less dramatics and more reality. The determinism therefore comes as no surprise, but you don’t expect to see such freedom of tone, emphasized through the pace of the storyline and some bold shots. If only the film was longer, and that’s not something we often wish for.
