Synopsis


Le A-Bomb Dome est le nom d'un ancien centre d'affaires japonais devenu le symbole de la destruction de la ville d'Hiroshima par la bombe atomique américaine en 1945. Cette bombe fait 70 000 morts sur le coup et 200 000 morts au total jusqu’à la fin du 20e siècle. Construit en 1915, le A-Bomb Dome est le seul bâtiment à être resté debout dans l'entourage immédiat du lieu de l'explosion. Il n'a jamais été restauré ; demeuré tel qu'au jour du bombardement, il est très vite devenu le monument souvenir des centaines de milliers de morts du 6 août 1945.

Comme un chercheur scientifique, un historien, un archiviste, Jean-Gabriel Périot compose son film avec des photographies glanées dans toutes sortes de sources d’archives. Toutes ces images sont placées à égalité entre elles, sans hiérarchie, ni classement esthétique, prisonnières d’un dispositif implacable. Le rythme court et le métronome de la chronologie leur assignent une place restreinte de rouage dans l’ensemble : matière avant d’être image. Film expérimental, esthétique, militant, politique. Ce court métrage est un des chefs-d’œuvre du cinématographe. Fascinant monument mémoriel.

Jean-Gabriel Périot

Born in France in 1974, Jean-Gabriel Périot has directed several short movies at the crossroads between documentary, animation and experimental filmmaking. He has developed his own style of editing that examines violence and history using film and photographic archives. His films, including "Dies Irae", "Eût-elle été criminelle…", "Nijuman no borei (200000 fantômes)" and "The Devil", have received awards in a great many festivals worldwide. His first feature-length film, "A German Youth" opened the Panorama Section of the 2015 Berlin Film Festival before being released in cinemas and winning several prizes in festivals. His latest long movie, "Our Defeats" was screened at the Forum of the 2019 Berlin Film Festival.
