Synopsis

The Photosopher, Instants with Frank Horvat is a film about photography. The photographer Frank Horvat, nearing 90 years old at the time of shooting, opens his archives, his memories and his private life and brings a cynical and sentimental eye to bear upon his life and work, on art and on humanity. Looking back, the man and artist speaks of the passion that has guided his existence: photography.

Tënk's film review

There is, of course, a specificity in the documentary portrayal of an admired figure. How do you create the conditions for complicit distance that goes further than a formulaic rhetoric of representation? Sandra Wis enters into Horvat’s world and he into hers without distancing us or making us feel ill at ease.
She, observed and observing, admiring muse and determined director, manages to be both the complicit and discreet conversational partner and the model who shows the photographer at work. She gives us access to the various layers of his art and the thinking that it triggers.
He, in the twilight of his life, knows that Sandra’s film does his work justice and that she’s providing a key element to showcase it. Ultimately, the two of them, Sandra Wis and Frank Horvat, offer us an immensely pleasurable film in which the photographic and documentary acts come together to celebrate the thinking of images.
