Iran, 1988. Thousands of political prisoners, locked up since the aftermath of the 1979 revolution, are massacred. The last revolutionaries opposed to Khomeini are liquidated in the greatest secrecy. Among them is Fatemeh Zarei, my mother”. While the Iranian state still denies its crimes and tries to erase their traces, the film goes in search of the places, objects and gestures that will allow us to unravel the silence, when personal experience is the only thing that can bear witness to politics.

Chowra Makaremi participated in the 2019 Festival Doc-Cévennes as the coordinator of the IRIS-EHESS event open to the public. She amazed us with this remarkable movie that shows her to be a talented filmmaker. With “Hitch”, the director tries to confront the void imposed by a totalitarian state. How is it possible to make a film with no images other than the imprisoned memories that keep alive the loved ones who disappeared in an oppressive political silence? This film echoes our festival’s epigraph borrowed from Patricio Guzmán: “a country without documentary films is like a family without a photo album, an empty memory”.
